Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). She was an obsessive performer when she was a kid and often reenacted TV commercials for family amusement. However, she decided to concentrate her energy on dance. She continued her dance training with a number of well-respected dancers after spending nine years learning classical ballet at Spain's National Conservatory. At 15, however she realized her real destiny when she outclassed more than 300 other dancers at a talent agency audition. The contract she was offered secured her roles on Spanish television programs as well as music videos. This opened up the doors to a promising career on the big screen. Cruz made her movie debut with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following that, she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) directed by Timothy Dalton. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In it, she played one of the four sisters that were trying to win the love of a handsome Army deserter. It also took home several Goyas in Spain that is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Her film resume continued to expand by 3-4 films per year, and eventually Cruz was a leading lady of Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when she took home the best Actress Goya for the movie industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). After a few more attempts at film in the English language, Cruz's first international success was in Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) in which she played the unchaste and well-meaning nun. Cruz was in hot demand in both the Atlantic and west coast, since the film won numerous awards and honors. Woman on Top (2000) was her next film.
